SAN DIEGO, May 5, 2006 -- Sempra Energy’s (NYSE: SRE) board of directors today announced that Joseph A. Householder has been promoted to senior vice president, controller and chief tax counsel.  He will also serve as the chief accounting officer of Sempra Energy.

As senior vice president, controller and chief tax counsel, Householder oversees the financial reporting and controls, financial planning and tax functions for all Sempra Energy companies.  He succeeds Frank H. Ault, who is retiring July 1, 2006, after 37 years with the company.

Householder previously served as vice president of corporate tax and chief tax counsel for Sempra Energy since 2001, a position in which he oversaw Sempra Energy’s worldwide tax affairs.

“Joe Householder is an experienced financial executive,” said Mark A. Snell, executive vice president and chief financial officer of Sempra Energy.  “We are pleased to have him assume responsibility for this critical function.”

Prior to joining Sempra Energy in 2001, Householder was a partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers in the firm’s national tax office.  Before assuming that position, he was vice president of corporate development and assistant chief financial officer of Unocal until 1999.  There, Householder was responsible for worldwide tax planning, financial reporting and forecasting, and risk-management compliance activities.

Householder holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Southern California and a law degree from Loyola Law School.  Additionally, he has completed the executive program at UCLA Anderson School.

He is a member of the Tax Executives Institute, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the California Bar and the American Bar Association.

Sempra Energy (NYSE: SRE), based in San Diego, is a Fortune 500 energy services holding company with 2005 revenues of $11.7 billion.  The Sempra Energy companies’ 14,000 employees serve more than 29 million consumers in the United States, Europe, Canada, Mexico, South America and Asia.
