SAN DIEGO, March 7, 2008 – Sempra Energy (NYSE:  SRE), an energy services holding company, has earned the No. 2 ranking among electric and gas utilities on Fortune magazine’s 2008 “America’s Most Admired Companies” list, published this week.  It is the second consecutive year Sempra Energy has achieved a top industry ranking in the magazine’s prestigious annual survey on corporate reputations.  The company moved up from No. 4 last year.

“Our success starts with our employees—the ingenuity they bring to the marketplace and their execution of our strategy,” said Donald E. Felsinger, chairman and chief executive officer of Sempra Energy.  “As we approach our 10-year anniversary we are honored to be recognized by Fortune and the business community that ranked us as one of the most admired U.S. companies.”

To construct its 2008 list, Fortune partnered with Hay Group on a survey of executives, directors and securities analysts in 64 different industries.  The survey respondents were asked to rank the top 10 companies of the Fortune 1,000 in each industry segment based on eight criteria from people management and innovation, to quality products/services and social responsibility.  Only those companies that scored the best in these criteria made the “America’s Most Admired Companies” list for their industry, according to the magazine.

Since Sempra Energy’s inception in 1998, the company has produced an average annual total return to investors of approximately 13 percent.  Sempra Energy also has been widely recognized for its leadership in corporate philanthropy, and for its efforts to develop a diverse workforce and network of suppliers.  For seven consecutive years, Sempra Energy ranked among the top five of Fortune’s “America’s Best Companies for Minorities.”
