LOS ANGELES, April 8, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Southern California Gas Co. (SoCalGas) is hosting the 14th Annual Municipal Green Building Conference and Expo: Rebuilding, Reinventing, and Reimagining Southern California Cities on Thursday, April 23 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at its Energy Resource Center, 9240 Firestone Blvd, in Downey. The expo is Southern California's longest-running and largest sustainability and green building event focusing on the unique needs and concerns of municipalities and the public.
Hosted annually by the Los Angeles and Orange County chapters of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and SoCalGas, this event brings together thought leaders, local government agencies, municipal policy makers, architects, building industry professionals and the public to further the development of a sustainable and energy-efficient future for Southern California.
More than two dozen educational sessions will feature all aspects of sustainable design, construction, and operational practices for buildings and communities, including their impact on people, climate, the environment, and the economy. This year, a special focus will be on water conservation, zero net energy building design and the Collaboration for High Performance Schools which looks at improving health and student performance, reducing operating costs and mitigating environmental impacts.
Keynote speakers will discuss a number of critical issues including water conservation, water resource management and sustainability in building design. The morning session will feature Judith Webb, executive vice president of the USGBC, and Jeremy Sigmon, director of technical policy for USGBC.
Sustainable City Plans: LA City Debuts and Santa Monica Reflects is the topic of the afternoon keynote. Presenting are Dean Kubani, director of the city of Santa Monica's Office of Sustainability and the Environment, and Ted Bardacke, deputy director of sustainability for the city of Los Angeles, and adjunct professor of urban environmental design and planning at UCLA.
Santa Monica has long been a leader when it comes to sustainability, with 2014 marking the 20th anniversary of adopting the Santa Monica Sustainable City Program. While Los Angeles has made great progress in regards to sustainability, it has taken a major leap forward by releasing its first ever Sustainable City pLAn. Conference attendees will hear a lively discussion about the juxtaposition between the old and the new, and learn about areas of opportunity for the building sector.
Also speaking is Eric Corey Freed, vice president of the International Living Future Institute, a global hub for visionary programs, including the Living Building Challenge and Living Product Challenge. As a licensed architect, Freed brings over 20 years of experience in helping architects, builders and homeowners use sustainability to improve the design and operational savings for thousands of buildings around the country.
