        SAN DIEGO, Aug. 27, 2007 – Sempra Energy (NYSE: SRE) today announced that J. William Ichord has joined the company as vice president of government relations and will direct local, state and federal governmental affairs.   

        Previously, Ichord, 52, was managing director of global affairs and international counsel of the American Chemistry Council, an industry trade group representing companies engaged in the business of chemistry.  
 
        “We are pleased to have Bill Ichord join Sempra Energy,” said Jessie J. Knight Jr., executive vice president of external affairs for Sempra Energy.  “He brings to our management team a wealth of experience in domestic and international energy policy development and advocacy, as well as international trade expertise.”

        Before joining the American Chemistry Council, Ichord had a 17-year career with Unocal Corporation, where he served as vice president and general manager of government and international relations.  Ichord also was vice president for the international public relations firm, Burson-Marsteller, and held staff positions with the United States Senate, serving as general counsel for Sen. John D. Rockefeller IV, counsel for the Senate Judiciary Committee and legislative assistant for Sen. Joseph Biden Jr. Ichord began his career as an environmental specialist and counsel for the U.S. Department of Energy.

        Ichord succeeds Thomas S. Sayles, who retired from Sempra Energy last year.

        Ichord holds a law degree from Washington University, St. Louis, and a bachelor’s degree in political science from Denison University, Granville, Ohio, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.  He is a member of the District of Columbia bar.
