SAN DIEGO, Oct. 10, 2007 – As part of its efforts to promote the development of renewable energy resources in California and nationwide, Sempra Energy (NYSE:  SRE) is sponsoring the Business Council for Sustainable Energy’s 2007 Conference this week at the Hilton Financial District Hotel in San Francisco.

The conference opens at 5:30 p.m. PDT today with a reception and speech by California Public Utilities Commission President Michael Peevey.  Tomorrow, the conference will feature keynote remarks by U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, as well as presentations by environmental, regulatory and energy industry leaders from across the nation.

“California has long played a leading role in the nation’s energy and environmental issues and Sempra Energy is working to meet the state’s renewable power portfolio standards while advocating a standard for the nation’s energy providers, “ said Jessie J. Knight Jr., executive vice president of external affairs for Sempra Energy.

“Sempra Energy’s efforts involve the proposed development of wind, solar and geothermal projects in the Southwest,” Knight said.  “Our most recent effort in this area involves Sempra Generation’s proposed 250-megawatt wind power project in Baja California that could be sending power to Southern California customers by 2010.  This project is just one segment of Sempra Energy’s ongoing effort to produce power while maintaining a small carbon footprint and enhancing energy efficiency. ”

Another Sempra Energy company, San Diego Gas & Electric, is working to acquire renewable energy and develop the transmission infrastructure necessary to enhance electric reliability and meet the state’s mandate to draw 20 percent of its power from renewable sources by 2010.

At 10:30 a.m. PDT tomorrow, Michael Murray, Sempra Energy’s director of corporate environmental policy, is scheduled to moderate a panel discussion involving “California and Western State Action – Implementation for Climate Change and Clean Energy Markets.”

In addition to its sponsorship of the sustainable energy forum, Sempra Energy is making a $500,000 endowment and research contribution to the Energy Efficiency Center at the University of California-Davis that is dedicated to promoting the center and its efforts to implement, inform, encourage and facilitate energy-efficiency solutions within the building, transportation, agriculture and food-production industries.  This contribution also supports the Energy Efficiency Center Climate Initiative, a series of research activities and workshops studying the energy-efficiency applications required to implement California’s Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006, also known as AB 32.

Sempra Energy is the parent company of San Diego Gas & Electric, Southern California Gas Co., Sempra Generation, Sempra LNG, Sempra Commodities and Sempra Pipelines & Storage.
